Woodchucks and many marmots are true hibernators with major seasonal changes in body weight and physiology. Hibernation should never be improvised. A long-term plan needs exact species identification, veterinary oversight, pre-hibernation health assessment and safe temperature/den conditions.
Natural cycles can affect appetite, sleep, body weight, coat, social tolerance and activity. A long-term care plan should record these patterns so a normal seasonal change is not confused with illness—and illness is not dismissed as “just seasonal.”
